Warm weather is here, and with it comes the promise of summertime fun. With more people out and about staying active and enjoying the sun, accidents and injuries typically rise, however. We’ve compiled a list of some common summer personal injuries or other accidents and safety tips on how to avoid them. Check them out here!
Dehydration is an extremely common occurrence here in the desert. With low humidity, evaporating sweat, and other desert conditions, one can lose hydration very quickly. It is important to drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day, and if you are planning on vigorous exercise or even simply being outdoors, you may even need to increase this intake. Some people may be more prone to dehydration than others as well, so always be aware of your own water intake, and others with you.
There are plenty of summertime activities that you can take part in. Some require specific equipment, while others may not require much. Even for those activities that do not have much equipment necessary, it is important to still be equipped and prepared. For instance, if you are going running, you do not need any special gear, but you should ensure that your tennis shoes are properly fitted, you have water, sunscreen, and whatever else you may need. For other activities, make sure that the equipment you have is appropriate for the sport and that it has been well kept.
More time in the sun means more of a chance of getting sunburnt. Sunburns are certainly annoying to deal with, but more than being a pest, they can actually result in serious health conditions, such as melanomas as well. It is important to stay protected from the sun whenever you spend any time outdoors. Cover exposed skin in sunscreen and remember to reapply throughout the day. Wear eye protection such as sunglasses. Consider wearing a hat of some sort to provide extra shade for your face and neck. Staying protected from the sun may mean not perfecting your tan, but the benefits will be worth it.
Another thing to stay protected from while you are outdoors is wildlife. This ranges from pesky mosquitoes to larger animals such as coyotes, mountain lions, and more. Wear bug spray if you will be in an area where there are more insects, keep an eye out for snakes, scorpions, and tarantulas, and consider carrying a repellent such as a bear spray to use if approached by a larger predator. There are many options for staying protected against wildlife. Doing some research beforehand can help you decide which option is best for your circumstances.
As you can see, summer safety tips can help prevent some unwanted injuries and accidents. While there are certainly more kinds of personal injuries than just these listed, these are summer specific and fairly common.
